The Phonics Screening check is a short assessment that your child takes part in so we can see how they are progressing with their phonics knowledge. Children will be asked to read 40 words in total; 20 real words and 20 alien words. Every child's score has to be reported to the Local Authority who then report these to the DFE.
We will share this information with all Parents in their child's end of year report. The pass mark has always been 32 out of 40 but this could always change. Any child who does not pass the check in Year 1 will take it again in Year 2.
The check does not take very long and will be done by Mrs Holt. Interim checks are performed throughout the year so teachers can keep an eye on children's progress and put appropriate support in place where necessary. The check is kept low key so children feel comfortable.
It is important that children feel confident to read alien words so practising reading these at home will be really helpful.
There will be a meeting for Parents on WEDNESDAY 25TH MARCH AT 9.00AM where Mrs Holt will talk through and explain the check.
